Spatial patterns of covariation in size-at-age of British Columbia and Alaska sockeye salmon stocks and effects of abundance and ocean temperature

چکیده
age were examined relative to climate variability and climate change. Good correlations were also found with climatic variables such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, Aleutian Low Pressure Index, or water temperature alone (Peterman, MacFarlane, Brown, Schweigert, Bonk, Tarasyuk). Competition with other pelagic species was suggested as a possible mechanism explaining changes in growth of chub mackerel (Watanabe). Ecosystem change was implicated as a factor explaining stock fluctuations in HokkaidoSakhalin herring whereas the co-occurring sardines stocks appear to be largely density dependent (Watanabe).

Seasonal Stock-Specific Migrations of Juvenile Sockeye Salmon along the West Coast of North America: Implications for Growth
—Knowledge of the migratory habits of juvenile Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. is required to test the hypothesis that ocean food resources are a limiting factor in their production. Using DNA stock identification techniques, we reconstructed the regional and seasonal changes in the stock composition of juvenile sockeye salmon O . nerka (n 1⁄4 4,062) collected from coastal Washington to the Al...
متن کاملRegional-Scale Declines in Productivity of Pink and Chum Salmon Stocks in Western North America
Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) stocks throughout the southern part of their North American range have experienced declines in productivity over the past two decades. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that pink (O. gorbuscha) and chum (O. keta) salmon stocks have also experienced recent declines in productivity by investigating temporal and spatial trends in productivity of 99 wild No...
متن کاملAn Improved Sibling Model for Forecasting Chum Salmon and Sockeye Salmon Abundance
—The sibling model is often one of the best methods for calculating preseason forecasts of adult return abundance (recruits) for populations of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. This model forecasts abundance of a given age-class for a given year based on the abundance of the previous age-class in the previous year. When sibling relations fit historical data well, the sibling model generally per...
متن کاملTrends in Abundance and Biological Characteristics of Chum Salmon
Chum salmon are the second most abundant salmon in the North Pacific Ocean. In the 1930s, chum salmon were abundant along the Russian coast and in British Columbia. The total catch of chum salmon was small from the late 1940s into the 1970s but increased in the 1980s, reaching historically high levels from the 1990s to the present. Ocean distribution of chum salmon is affected by sea surface te...
متن کاملSeasonal Habitat Use and Early Marine Ecology of Juvenile Pacific Salmon in Southeastern Alaska
Habitat use and early marine ecology of juvenile (age-.O) Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) were studied monthly at inshore, strait, and coastal habitats along a seaward migration corridor in southeastern Alaska from May through October 1997-99. A total of 31 ,853 fish from 40 taxa were captured with 283 surface trawl hauls; juvenile salmon made up 61 % of the total catch. Predation on juvenil...
